Our Programs and ServicesBalanced School Day Le Phare E.S. follows a balanced school day timetable that divides the day into three blocks of instructional time with two recess/nutrition breaks.
Early French Immersion Program The research conducted in the Ottawa-Carleton Board of Education indicates that the Early French Immersion program is successful and that the aim of functional bilingualism is a realistic one for our pupils, with no decrease in English achievement scores resulting from children learning two languages. Many of the area families enrol their children at Le Phare despite their limited or non-existent French languages skills because they recognize the value of French as a second-language. Our teachers are experienced with encouraging students into day-to-day French learning experiences in a supportive environment. Of interest, a number of Le Phare students are multilingual and French represents a third language in addition to English and their language spoken at home. In Immersion Kindergarten, we focus on the development of the child's listening comprehension in French. The children are taught a basic vocabulary, follow simple instructions, and learn to respond verbally in French, as well as learning the same readiness skills as they would in the English program. Senior Kindergarten is the entry point for the Early Immersion program. The children are taught in French 100% of the time in both senior kindergarten and grade 1. The development of speaking and reading skills begins in grade 1. With the introduction of English in grade 2, the French portion drops to 80% and is gradually diminished to about 50% from grade 5 onwards. While children are taught initially to read in French, they transfer these reading skills readily to English and by the end of grade 3 are performing as well as their peers in the regular English program. Students who successfully pursue the Early French Immersion program throughout grades 7 and 8 and secondary school are eligible to receive an Immersion Certificate. Academic Programs Our students study the same curriculum content as their peers in the regular English program. Initial literacy training, as well as mathematics and other subjects are presented to the pupils using the second language.
Special Education and ESL Programs Students with learning difficulties or gifted students have specific accommodations and receive individual education plans provided by a homeroom teacher with support from a Learning Support Teacher. Our Learning Support Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers to provide:
